Wigan’s a great place to shop!
Shopping in Wigan is now more popular than ever as more and more great shops compete for the shopper’s attention across every corner of the town. Wigan’s retail sector has grown massively over the last few years, going from the high street shops in the town centre (which include Top Man, Marks & Spencer, Brithish Home Stores, Next and Primark – to name but a few – to a new shoppping arcade built next to the old arcade, housing shops like Stolen from Ivor and Duffer, to a second recently built, spacious shopping arcade right opossite the two old ones.
The new Grand Arcade is a modern affair, not unlike the Trafford Centre in Manchester but on a smaller scale. Debenhams moved from it’s prime position on the high street into the arcade as soon as it opened in Easter 2007.
Further out toward Wigan Pier lies Wigan’s Robin Retail Park, next to the JJB stadium, which is host to one of the country’s first-built Asda hypserstores and other big retail names such as Next, Matalan and Boots.
Shoppers travel from all over the place to Wigan for a complete shopping experience. The truth is, Wigan is a small town centre. This makes it a great place to shop because, unilke in the big cities, you don’t have to walk for miles and you’re never far away from one of it’s many car parks – wherever you happen to park!
Proof of how popular Wigan is as a shopping location can be clearly seen on any weekend and especially on the weeks leading to Christmas, which is a great testimony to the fact that Wigan has today become a 1-stop shopping centre where you can find everything from toys, presents, gifts, cards, fashion, jewlery, bags and electrodomestics.
Wigan also has great coffee shops, including Starbucks and Cafe Nero as well as the more traditional tea shops, and a great variety of bakeries, sandwhich shops and traditional fish and chip shops.
